Order of the National Green Tribunal (Western Zone Bench, Pune) in the matter of Mukta Sathe & Ors. Vrs. Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India & Ors. dated 21/03/2017 regarding equipping railway coaches with eco-friendly bio-toilets. Ministry of Railways submits that at present there are 55,000 (fifty five thousands) coaches in service which require 2,20,000 bio-toilets; and 54,188 bio-toilets out of them have already been fitted in coaches by the end of the year 2016; and taking into consideration the balance coaches, resources available with the Indian Railways, it will be possible to install bio-toilets in all the coaches by 2021-22.
NGT directs Ministry of Railways to place before the Court an yearwise programme spelling out number of coaches to be equipped with bio-toilets and the constraints, if any, on accelerating this process further so as to shorten the period of equipping all the Railway Coaches with bio-toilets.
