 Algae accused [1]

Spirogyra along with another algal species Cladophora, disrupts normal aquatic life and forces municipalities to spend enormous sums on declogging water bodies (Frontiers -Newsletter of the National Science Foundation. December. 1995).

R Jan Stevenson of the University of Louisville in Kentucky. US. has reiterated the wisdom of following nature's ways. The key to the problem according to him lies in keeping streams and brooks shaded with trees because when this is done, the water in them remains clear and Spirogyra and Cladophora live in harmony with other forms of life therein. But. when trees are cut, these algae thrive in the newly available light and create an imbalance.
