Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of S Rajaseekaran Vs Union of India & Others dated 06/02/2023.

The matter is related to road safety and prevention of accidents. In response to the SC order of January 6, 2023 a meeting was convened by Justice A M Sapre, Chairperson of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. The Committee has drawn up a road map for taking steps for the implementation of Section 136A of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

One of the suggestions of the petitioner (S Rajaseekaran) pertains to the need for the inclusion of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the framework for implementing Section 136A, having due regard to the large number of accidents which take place on national highways.

The SC directed that the above aspect must be taken note by the Chairperson of the Committee so that appropriate directions can be issued for including NHAI within the framework, if found necessary and listed the matter for April 6, 2023.
