Britain has failed to meet the April 21 deadline to comply with the European Union's (eu) directive on recycling cars. In fact, the uk isn't alone in non-adherence to the time schedule, with most eu member nations lagging behind. Even as they are in the process of changing their laws and systems, there is a possibility of the European Commission (ec) initiating legal proceedings against member states if they do not work expeditiously towards implementing the law signed two years ago. The eu 's end-of-life vehicle (elv) directive came into force on April 21 to ensure that up to 95 per cent of any scrap vehicle is recycled by 2015. The British government is mum on how the dismantling operation would be funded. Germany is set to finalise its scrap car legislation soon while offering us $235 million a year in tax breaks for the period of 2002-2007. Spain has allocated us $247 million to cover the costs of setting up a nationwide network of scrap yards.
