Bangladesh has clamped a ban on the production and use of polythene bags. This has been done to protect the environment and promote the use of jute products. The flood-prone country's drainage system was being choked by polybags and there were recent reports of a layer of polythene on the bed of the Buriganga river in Dhaka which hampered dredging of the water body.
