The French National Assembly adopted the Charter for the Environment in 2004 and integrated it into the Constitution of the French Fifth Republic by the amendment of March 1, 2005. On June 19, 2008, the French constitutional council, Conseil constitutionnel, in a landmark decision on the constitutionality of the statute on Genetically Modified Organisms, reaffirmed the constitutional value of every right and duty defined in the 2004 Charter for the Environment.
