Buddhist monks in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district have reason to cheer as their movement to save the winter habitat of the black-necked crane seems to have borne fruit. The Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII)’s recent report, recommending the rejection of the proposed 780-MW Nyamjang Chhu hydropower project, is being viewed by the monks as a moral victory as it will help preserve the habitat of the revered bird-called the bird of fortune by the community-in the Zemithang valley of the district. The development of the dam (Nyamjang Chhu project) will eventually submerge the entire habitat of the vulnerable blacknecked crane in Zemithang, the WII report said.
