The Central Government vide notification dated 5th September, 2022 has issued the Environment (Protection) Second Amendment Rules, 2022. The amendment mandates retirement of thermal power plants for exemption from compliance parameters other than SO2 emissions from within 10 km radius of National Capital Region or cities having million plus population or within 10 km radius of Critically Polluted Areas or Non-attainment cities. Environment compensation shall be levied on plants that fails to retire.
