In 1996 there has been a significant development in drugs for the treatment of AIDS. Even as Americans and Europeans are optimistic about the success of anti-AIDS drugs, a report by United Nations Programme on AIDS serves as a grim reminder that more than 90 per cent of the world's HIV and AIDS victims are too poor to benefit from the expensive new therapies. Most public health experts agree that money is better spent on prevention and education, than on expensive treatments. Ultimately, finding a vaccine offers the only real solution to halting the pandemic. Yet, only one per cent of AIDS research expenditure goes into vaccine research.
