Proceedings of the workshop on “Air Quality (AQ) Monitoring, Modeling and Assessment Workshop” on 22nd March 2013 [1]

Bangalore is one of the fastest growing cities in Asia with a population of over 8 million and growing rapidly in all directions. With accelerated economic development and coupled with uncontrolled urbanization, the number of vehicles on the road has increased exponentially over the last ten years. The cities vehicular population is around 4.5 million, and contributes 60-70 percent of the pollution load to the environment. The sources of air pollution area now shifting from large point sources such as industrial and thermal power plant chimneys to more diffuse sources from transportation network. These diffuse sources of the air pollution are more difficult to manage and expensive and complicated to regulate. Therefore air pollution control strategies for mobile sources are urgently needed to mitigate the negative impact air quality on human health and environment in metropolitan Bangalore. This workshop highlights one of the air pollution control strategies, successfully implemented in several countries of Europe, United States of America and Canada. It is appropriate now to consider some these options for Bangalore to remedy the present unacceptable level of air pollution.
