WWF Forest and Climate is pleased to share preliminary materials from a forthcoming report on lessons learned from Jurisdictional Approaches to Zero-Deforestation, including the executive summary and a video introduction. Jurisdictional approaches seek to align interests and coordinate actions among governments, businesses, local communities, and NGOs toward shared conservation, supply chain sustainability, and green development goals. Focusing on the political level at which land use decisions are made and enforced, they work to advance land use planning of production and protection areas through geographically tailored policy interventions, market-based incentives, and, often, climate finance. In May 2017, WWF convened a group of experts and practitioners for a three-day workshop in Brasilia to “unpack” and analyze five leading jurisdictional initiatives in a peer-to-peer setting: Acre and Mato Grosso states in Brazil, the group of departments comprising Colombia's Orinoquia watershed, southern Ghana's cocoa-producing region, and southeastern Liberia. Based on the conversations and expertise from this workshop, Tackling Deforestation Through A Jurisdictional Approach: Lessons From The Field, to be released in October, offers a full synthesis of lessons learned and jurisdictional case studies.
