Although, the rate of literacy is higher in Bhopal as compared to other cities of the state, the women folk are still ignorant of recent technological developments and the aquaculture technology is no exception. In view of this perspective, the Department of Applied Aquaculture, Barkatullah University, Bhopal implemented a training programme, sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, to create awareness of recent aquaculture technologies among them. The project executed for a period of three years (2002-2005) under which six villages of Phanda block, Bhopal were identified.

A pilot study was undertaken to assess the potential fertility of lentic waters and to ellucidate the ecology of aquatic flora. In addition, studies were performed at microcosmal level and the results, so obtained, were applied at field level, to forsee the impact of nutrients on natural waters.

The Madhya Pradesh government wants to open the Union Carbide plant to the public. The principal secretary of the state claims this will dispel the “myth” about toxins left at the site. A recent study by Centre for Science and Environment found that the profile of chemicals found within the factory premises matches that of chemicals found in adjacent localities. Moderately persistent chemicals called Carbamates were also found in the city’s groundwater. Clearly, the factory is polluting the environment even 25 years after the plant was shut down.

Despite the negative image about Bhopal created by the Union Carbide gas leak tragedy, the position is different when it comes to the city's concerns for its environment.
