Around 150 companies, led by state-owned oil marketing companies and Reliance Industries (RIL), the country's largest private company, have evinced interest in production of biodiesel. The move comes on the back of the government's plan to introduce a 20 per cent blending of the non-fossil fuel with diesel.

Emphasis on promotion of biofuels can be useful for solving rural energy problems.

THE government is planning to make it mandatory for oil companies to sell a 20% ethanol-blended petrol across the country by 2017. The National Policy on Biofuels, which was cleared by the Cabinet on Thursday, has set a target to achieve higher blending of biofuel in both petrol and diesel.

Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has constituted a 14-member bio-fuel task force, headed by Y B Ramakrishna of Samagra Vikas Trust.

Prof Balakrishnegowda and Athihalli Devaraj of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, Udupi Srinivas of Indian Institute of Science, Prof S G Patil of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad are among the members on the task force.

Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai will be the chairman of the 20-member strong Water Resources Authority.
