COIMBATORE: Residents of localities near the Employees State Insurance Corporation hospital on Kamarajar Road, Singanallur, are troubled by smoke coming out of the waste being burnt at the hospital.

S. Chandrasekar, an activist who works in the area, said for the past four months waste was being burnt at regular intervals at the hospital.

Clearance of solid and liquid waste is a challenge in itself.

Bangalore is in a better position compared to other parts of the State when it comes to implementation of an action plan on bio-medical waste management.

Twenty-eight hospitals in Karnataka were involved in an internationally funded pilot project for better management of biomedical waste last year.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), along with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), had launched the project in five states, including Karnataka.
