'India generates around 3.30 lakh tonnes of bio-medical waste annually. But the country is a centre of excellence in healthcare in the world and recently there has been a tremendous influx of westerners seeking medical care.

Months after notices were issued to 56 hospital establishments in Pune, 177 hospitals and clinics in Solapur and Satara districts have been issued show-cause notices by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for not treating their bio-medical waste. MPCB officials said the Pune hospitals had paid the fines and authorisation certificates had been issued to them.

Formation of a high-powered committee to ensure safe and efficient disposal of hospital waste was ordered Wednesday by a division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi.

Bokaro, Jan. 4: Bokaro civil surgeon Dr Pramod Kumar has issued fresh orders to private nursing homes in the district about safe disposal of biomedical waste.

The Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) today finalised the contract to lift hotel garbage as well as the medical waste from the city.
An organization called Unique Solid Waste Management from Taleigao was awarded the tender for Rs 1.30 lakh per month.

Though this town has emerged as a major destination for health services, it lacks infrastructure for scientific disposal of the bio-medical waste generated by the mushrooming hospitals and clinics. The hazardous waste is transported to Ludhiana for being destroyed.

Biomedical wastes are posing a great threat in Odisha. With the growing number of private hospitals and more of super speciality centres of cure, the issue of biomedical waste disposal is turning out to be a nightmare for environmentalists.

Eleven sites have been identified in Tamil Nadu for setting up common facilities in the private sector for handling waste, covering about 2,480 hospitals and 54,792 beds.

They cumulatively generate about 16.5 tonnes of waste daily, according to Mr R. Ramachandran, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Pollution Control Board.
