The district may have received heavy rains, but the problem of water scarcity remains. Residents desperate for water - both for drinking and agriculture- have dug thousands of wells, but to no avail.

Members of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, farmers, several farm labourers took out a protest march and staged a dharna, in Kolar on Thursday.

Works on Yaragol project that would provide permanent solution to water woes in Kolar district, have been suspended due to infighting among the elected representatives.

Rs 30 crore worth pipes brought for this project work are lying disused near Omkarashrama on Kolar-Bangarpet road.

Long-standing demand

Though Masti hobli has been allotted funds amounting to several crores under the Suvarna Grama Yojane, failure on the part of Zilla Panchyat officials has affected developmental works in the region, said Minister for Housing and Musrai S N Krishnaiah Setty here on Sunday.

The builders and strongmen do no bother about the rules and regulations in Kolar. Several years old drainage system is closed and constructed road over it. In several places buildings have been constructed over the drainage. It is not that the high officials are not aware of what are going on in their area. They do know what are going on but don't bother to raise a finger against the culprits.

The Karnataka High Court has granted an interim stay order to stop the granite quarrying being carried out by the Andhra-based KNR group near Aroor village in the taluk.

Due to the illegal quarrying being carried out the houses in and around Aroor villages are developing cracks. Vessels and other utensils are falling down. There is also danger to the lives of people living in these houses.

Srinivaspur, DH News Service:

The drinking water to some of the villages in the Srinivaspur taluk is being supplied through tankers by the respective gram panchayats.

A member of the Taluk Panchayat has been obstructing the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and thus he needs to be disqualified, said activists of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha.

The taluk, dependent on rains for its water requirements, is under the throes of acture water scarcity this year.

With the groundwater table hitting the nadir, more than 20 borewells sunk by Town Municipal Council have dried up. It has become difficult to strike water even if one digs to a depth of 1,000 feet.
