The Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, Shivraj V Patil, has suggested that the schools and colleges in the city should have solar power plants on their rooftops.
Five years after it was first conceived and a year since its approval, Chandigarh officially became a Model Solar City on Wednesday after Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdul
The state-wise names of the Cities identified for developing as Solar Cities are given in this statistics. The criteria set by the Ministry for the identification of cities include a city population between 50,000 to 50 lakh (with relaxation given to special category States including North-Eastern States), initiatives and regulatory measures already taken alongwith a high level of commitment in promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The criteria set by the Ministry for selection of cities to be developed as Solar Cities include a city population between 0.50 to 50 lakh (with relaxation given to North- Eastern and hilly States, Islands and Union Territories) and initiatives already taken by the city in promoting renewable energy & energy efficiency and also a high level of commitment. Based on proposals received by the Government from various States, in-principle approval has been given to 48 Cities to be developed as Solar Cities in the country.
