KOLKATA: Two tigers were trapped in quick succession by the authorities of the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve on Tuesday to mitigate man-animal conflict on the estuarine islands, officials of the West Bengal Forest Department said on Wednesday.

Sundarbans, the largest estuarine mangrove forest in the world, also boasts of the highest number of tigers in the country. Now enumerators are carrying out the arduous task of counting the big cats in nearly 1,600 sq km of inhospitable forest terrain.

KOLKATA: Animal instinct seems to have won over human intervention in one particular case as a pair of tigers detached the radio-collar fastened onto a tigress less than two weeks ago by officials of the State's forest department as part of the ongoing tiger census.

The much-awaited tiger census in the Sunderbans, where DNA sampling would be made for the first time to establish the number of big cats, began on Thursday.

Tiger scat will be collected for DNA sampling which is a foolproof method to establish their number, Field Director of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve Subrat Mukherjee said.

The much-awaited tiger census in the Sunderbans forest will begin next month and preparations are underway to conduct the exercise with DNA sampling method for the first time.

KOLKATA: To combat the situation of an increasing number of incidents of tigers straying into the inhabited areas of the Sunderbans islands and attacking the locals, the authorities have decided to introduce deer in the forested areas to supplement the prey base for the big cats.

The West Bengal government for the first time will conduct tiger census through DNA sampling of the animal's scat in Sunderbans in January next year.

Tiger censusTill now, pug marks were used to count the tigers, but there was always controversy regarding the veracity of the marks.
