The KHADC has decided to appeal to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to repeal its earlier order to ban rat hole mining in Meghalaya.

“We are in the process of filing an appeal. We are likely to file the appeal on the day of the hearing of the tribunal on May 19,” KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit told newsmen here on Thursday.

The Meghalaya Coal Miners and Exporters Association, South West Khasi Hills, has opposed the recent order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning rat hole mining in the State.

A student organisation in the state has urged the government to challenge the National Green Tribunal’s order to ban mining or removal of sand from river beds.

Meghalaya is only state in the country which records the highest density of elephant per square area.
