The Supreme Court has ordered the forced eviction of more than 1,000,000 tribal and other forest-dwelling households from forestlands across 16 states after the government failed to defend a law protecting their rights.

Several states have failed to file their affidavits in this matter in spite of having 4 weeks time. Apex Court imposes a cost of Rs. 50,000 on the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and directs all the states to take the matter seriously.
