University of Calcutta was founded on January 24, 1857 by the incorporation of an Act of the Legislative Council of the then British India. The University was certainly established to promote western knowledge and learning in colonial interest. But ultimately, it emerged as the nucleus of a range of academic activities which contributed to the development of Indian science and technology and our own understanding of the country's past and the nation's perceptions for the future. B.Tech degrees in Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering, two M.Tech degrees in Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation and Control Engineering and two part-time M. Tech. degrees in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power) and Instrumentation and Control Engineering. Research activities are one of the prime outputs of the department.
