Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding air pollution in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 02/07/2019
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Amit M. Panchal Vs State of Gujarat dated 02/07/2019 regarding remedial action to check air pollution in the Ahmedabad city in the interest of public health and the rule of law.
The issue of Pirana landfill site came into fore as coninuous smoke emanates from the municipal solid waste dump site due to landfill fires. The NGT was told that Pirana landfill was a huge source of pollution and should be dealt with as a legacy waste as per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The Tribunal directed the constitution of a Committee, with the Secretary, Urban Development, Gujarat, to be nodal officer for coordination and compliance to address the issue. The state of Gujarat would transfer a sum of Rs. 75 crores to an ESCROW account. The Committee has been asked to propose a prompt timeline within which the whole project would be completed in view of health hazard being faced by the local residents.
