Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding dumping of waste in Circular Canal, Kolkata, West Bengal, 17/10/2023

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) regarding In Re: “Banks of the Circular Canal are getting “Stolen” regularly near Galiff Street: wastes and garbage spreading pollution” – News item published in Bartaman, Daily Bengali Newspaper, dt.15.10.2023, Kolkata dated 17/10/2023.

An article was published in 'Bartman', a daily Bengali newspaper, October 15, 2023 which said that the Circular Canal situated at Galiff Street in North Kolkata is getting narrowed down due to encroachment. The banks of the canal are gradually getting "stolen" every day. Additionally, the locals residing by the canal have constructed toilets along the banks using bamboos and other materials. Wastes and garbage have been spotted flowing through the canal, heavily and wastes from different parts are getting dumped there.

The NGT took up the matter suo-motu for consideration and directed notice to be issued to the Department of Irrigation and Waterways, Department of Environment, Department of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Kolkata Municipal Corporation and West Bengal Pollution Control Board. The court listed the matter of November 29, 2023.
