Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding illegal mining in the river Chapora, Goa, 26/02/2019
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Saidas R. Khorjuvekar Vs Directorate of Mines & Geology dated 26/02/2019 regarding illegal mining in the river Chapora situated in the north District of Goa. The case was instituted in the year 2015 and during the course of proceedings various directions have been issued. The records reveal that the State of Goa has been taking various steps, including constitution of a District Committee for North Goa to deal with the grant of permits for manual extraction of sand and its monitoring.
NGT directs the State of Goa to file an affidavit mentioning the steps taken in terms of the directions issued from time to time. The State has been asked to comply with the order asking for installation of CCTV cameras at ‘Zuvom de Tuyem’ island in the river Chapora situated between Camurlim, Bardez Goa. Further NGT directs the Director of Mines and Geology to deposit a Performance Guarantee of Rs. 20 Lakhs with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) within a period of 10 days to ensure compliance.
