Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding pollution of river Yamuna, 16/02/2023

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Ashwani Yadav Vs Govt. of NCT of Delhi dated 16/02/2023.

The matter related to pollution of river Yamuna.

The report filed by the Haryana government showed that there is discharge of 540 MLD untreated effluents in 11 drains connected to Yamuna in Haryana. Further, estimation of sewage generation in Haryana for Yamuna catchment in 34 towns has been mentioned showing a gap of 240 MLD in installed capacity and generation.

The Haryana government said that STPs are being constructed to bridge the said gap by December 31, 2023. The NGT, February 16, 2023 said that there was a huge gap in generation and treatment of sewage and that needs to be remedied on war footing "instead of proposed plan of achieving the targets in the year 2027 after four years, thereby continuing damage to the environment for the next four years". This needs to be monitored by the Chief Secretary, Haryana and further progress report filed by April 30, 2023.

The tribunal expressed its displeasure on the fact that Uttar Pradesh has not filed its report on the matter and was asked to file further progress report by April 30, 2023.
