Report filed by the Greater Chennai Corporation in the matter of Tribunal on its own motion - Suo Motu based on the news item published in Dinamalar Newspaper, April 7, 2021 " Will garbage bin be installed' Vs Department of Environment & Forests, Tamil Nadu & Others dated 15/06/2021.
The NGT in its order, May 21, 2021 had directed the Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation and also the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to file reports regarding implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 in the area (V block, 11th street, Anna Nagar) mentioned in the news article.
The report said that garbage removal work is being carried out in all zones coming under Chennai Corporation. Door to door collection of garbage is done by sanitary workers with tricycles provided with bins. The garbage thus collected were dumped in the compactor bins kept and transported to the transfer stations located in each zone. From the transfer stations the garbage is being transported through haulage vehicles and dumped at Perungudi dumping ground and Kodungaiyur dumping ground.
The bio-degradable waste/organic waste is being composted at ward level by ordinary and vermicompost plants and bio methanation plants and manure used for Greater Chennai Corporation parks and greeneries besides open sale to public also.
