Cadmium in kidneys

Cadmium,'which is a naturally occurring element, finds considerable use in industry. It, however, gets into the food chain and enters the human body. The exposure to cadmium and its subsequent accumulation in human body causes renal malfunction, leading to damaged kidneys.

Scientists in Spain investigated should the influence of factors such as sex, age and drug addiction on cadmium levels in the outer layer of the kidney tissues of humans (Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, Vol 54, No 6). Preliminary results indicate that people in the age group of 31-40 are particularly susceptible to cadmium toxicity. Factors like sex or addictive drug influences were negligible.
