Delhi ridge in trouble

the construction of a building inside the northern ridge in Delhi by the state's forest department has been criticised by environmental organisations. Non-governmental Organisations Forum, a body of eight ngos working on in Delhi on environmental issues submitted a letter in this regard to the chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dixit, and state environment minister A K Walia. The ngos say that the construction violates the Supreme Court orders which said that no construction should be undertaken inside the ridge. The letter stated, "the forest department has lost all moral authority to fulfil the role of a protector of the ridge forest, as well as the greenery of the city.'

The Delhi forest department has constructed a four-room office building on the northern ridge, near the Kamala Nehru ridge forest.

Conservator of forests H C Dhawan said that his department has not violated any Supreme Court orders. He added that they have constructed a temporary structure to be used as a store. "It is not a cement structure that can be called permanent. And we will cover it with a roof, which also makes it temporary,' said Dhawan.
