Dolphins in trouble

thirteen bottle-nosed dolphins were found dead on the shores of Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh. According to the Vishakhapatnam Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (vspca ), the dolphins had been killed by fisherfolk. This incident has caused serious concern among conservationists. The post-mortem examination conducted by the authorities at the Vizag-based Indira Gandhi Zoological Park confirmed that the dolphins had injuries on the neck and tail regions implying that they had been clubbed to death.

Zoo officials said that fisherfolk resorted to killing the dolphins caught in their nets as they feared the mammals would drag their boats miles into the sea. It is ironical that the fisherfolk kill dolphins as it is these gentle creatures who lead them to areas where they can get a very large catch of fish.
