Fertiliser from waste

Indigenous technology to produce biofertiliser and protein-rich animal feed from maize waste has shown promising results with a Secunderabad-based company succeeding in marketing products based on the technology. Developed by the Thapar Corporate Research and Development Centre in Patiala, Punjab, the biofertiliser called "Suryamin' was marketed by Pratistha Industries Limited in Secunderabad. Protein derived from maize starch units is used as the raw material. The amino acid-based product, used as a spray, accelerates photosynthesis and increases crop yield by 20-30 per cent ( PTI Science Service , Aug 16-31, 1999).
