UK to reduce waste

the uk plans to reduce its nuclear sea discharges by up to 85 per cent by 2020 to meet its European commitments, announced Michael Meacher, the country's environment minister.

He said the commitment, agreed in Sintra in Portugal in 1998, referred to nuclear discharges exceeding the maximum limit set for disposal in the sea.

The latest plans call for discharges from all nuclear reprocessing units to be curbed. The environmental pressure group Greenpeace said that this would still leave Sellafield as one of the world's biggest nuclear polluters.

It criticised the government's claims of curbing pollution to a great extent and stated that it has failed to meet its commitments made to the international community to reduce active discharge.
