The common effluent treatment plant (CETP) at Jajmau, Kanpur is having capacity of 36 MLD to treat 9 MLD tannery effluent and 27 MLD domestic sewage effluent. All the tannery units discharge primarily treated effluent through a conveyance channel, which is further pumped through 4 pumping stations into 36 million litres per day (MLD) CETP designed to treat mixed effluent consisting of 9 MLD tannery effluent and 27 MLD domestic sewage.
The maintenance of conveyance channel, pumping stations and the operation of the CETP is done by the Ganga Pollution Control Unit, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, Kanpur.
No hazardous waste is dumped at Rakhi Mandi, Kanpur Nagar at present and the analysis of ground water sample indicates that the sub soil water is not contaminated - so there is no need of remediation. Piped water supply to the residents of Rakhi Mandi has been provided by the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam since January 15, 2020 through 2510 meter pipe line and 225 household connections.
Supply of safe water to the residents of village Khanchandpur, Rania is also being provided by the UP Jal Nigam through piped water supply system since July 15, 2020.
These were some of the findings of the report by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on the matter of water pollution by tanneries at Jajmau, Kanpur and water pollution at Rania, Kanpur Dehat and Rakhi Mandi, Kanpur Nagar due to chromium dumps in its report to the NGT.
