Hyderabad, Aug. 4 Worried over decreasing groundwater levels and presence of nitrates and heavy metals, the Andhra Pradesh Government has initiated a study to assess the quality and quantity of groundwater in the Hussainsagar catchment area.

The study would suggest measures to plug the sources of pollution and exploitation and recharge groundwater levels.

Hyderabad Sept. 4: Several MLCs on Thursday expressed concern over the pollution in Hussainsagar and asked the municipal administration department take immediate steps to control the inflow of industrial effluents into the lake. The Congress MLC Kanukula Janaradhan Reddy raised the issue during the question hour in the Council and said pollution had become a health hazard to the people residing in the surrounding areas.

The popular "Jalavihar" on the banks of Hussainsagar lake adjoining the Necklace road has come under the scrutiny. The state government has constituted a three member committee for periodical inspection of the "Jalavihar Project" to avoid possible ecological imbalances due to illegal construction by company in violation of the approved plans. The AP Vigilance Commission has advised the government to conduct periodical inspection.

The 400 years old city of Hyderabad is an industrially developed city surrounded by many industrial estates which continually discharge large amounts of wastewaters into the nearby receiving water bodies. The present paper aims to study the impact of the pollution characteristics of such industrial discharges on their receiving water bodies. 2007
