The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has identified 11 stretches in 12 states in the country for setting up high-speed six- to eight-lane expressways in the country in the first phase of its plan. The stretches so far identified add up to a total length of 3,530 km and would be built at a cost exceeding Rs 20,000 crore as per the plan prepared by the ministry.

In its first meeting on Monday, the newly-constituted empowered group of ministers (EGoM) for the roads sector will take stock of the finances available and also discuss ways to meet the funding requirement of National Highways Authority of India, estimated at estimated at Rs 47,736 crore, for 2010-11.
