Waste liquid material from chemical and pesticide factories in Mandhor village, close to the city, has started polluting the village handpumps.

A few villagers met officials of the Haryana pollution Control Board at Panchayat Bhawan today. The chairman of the board addressed a meeting of panches and sarpanches on the precautions to be taken to check pollution in their villages.

Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), manufactured a pesticide called Sevin, at the production facility in Bhopal, for which one of the raw materials is Methylisocyanate (MIC). MIC was also being produced in an adjacent plant.

The government plans to strengthen the regulatory framework for the pesticides sector by setting up a Central Pesticides Board and making registration mandatory for all new products.

25 years after the gas leak, another tragedy is unfolding in Bhopal reveals this study by Centre for Science & Environment. This study based on CSE's Pollution Monitoring Laboratory tests found that water and soil in & around the Union Carbide factory are loaded with pesticides.

For more than 25 years, the Union Carbide (UCIL) factory has been contaminating the land and water of Bhopal. Latest tests show that groundwater in areas even three km away from the factory contains almost 40 times more pesticides than Indian standards.
