SHILLONG/JOWAI: Six government vehicles were set on fire by unidentified miscreants during the past 24 hours while the second day of the KSU night road blockade started amid minor incidents of violence on Thursday in the four districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills.
Stray incidents of violence were reported on the first night of the road blockade called by Khasi Students Union to protest the proposed uranium mining project in Meghalaya. A SUV was burnt near Nartiang in Jaintia Hills district last night and a Government owned vehicle torched in Mawlai area of the capital city this morning, police said.
Protests over the proposed uranium mining project in Meghalaya are veering towards a confrontationist path, as the influential Khasi Students Union (KSU) spearheading the campaign announced a two-night road blockade of the national Highway 44.
NONGSTOIN: Member of the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (CWSC&ST) and Congress legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh has stated that the anti-uranium group is no different to the militant insurgent groups even as he stated that there is foreign hand sponsoring the anti-uranium groups to destabilise the nation.
