SHILLONG, July 31: A good quality of wood charcoal produced from woods is being supplied to the industries at Byrnihat. Since the demand for it is very high and the seasonal woods are disappearing at a very high rate, people are turning to soft woods like pine trees. Nowadays, pine trees are the latest victim of the people involved in charcoal business in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

SHILLONG: The State Government has procured 30,000 vaccines from Croatia for the ongoing mass vaccination against meningococcal meningitis that has reportedly claimed 257 lives in Meghalaya in 2008-09.

With 30,000 more vaccines, about three lakh people will be vaccinated against the disease. Out of the 257 meningitis deaths so far, 14 have been confirmed by doctors.

SHILLONG: The State Government will conduct free mass vaccination against meningococcal meningitis this week in West Khasi Hills where more than 45 people have died of the disease.

According to KSU's West Khasi Hills president John F Nongsiang, Health Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday assured a delegation of KSU that mass vaccination would be carried out in the district.

NONGSTOIN: The meningo-coccal meningitis situation in West Khasi Hills has turned worse, with 45 deaths from the disease reported in the district so far.

Three suspected meningitis patients were admitted to Nongstoin Civil Hospital and two of them later referred to Shillong Civil Hospital on Thursday.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya is awaiting medical kits from the Centre to go for a mass vaccination to combat the dreaded meningocal meningitis in four districts of the State.

SHILLONG: Former Rajya Sabha MP Robert Kharshiing has reiterated that Meghalaya should never allow the Centre to mine for uranium in the State, saying the proposed uranium mining project in West Khasi Hills would cause health hazards and environmental degradation.
