Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Dr. Kiran Ramdas Kamble & Others Vs State of Maharashtra dated 25/11/2019 regarding deficiencies in functioning of STP at Trimbakeshwar, District Nasik, Maharashtra.
Report filed by the Collector, District Nasik and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board on October 10, 2019 mentions the fact that the capacity of flow of STP was not adequate and no system for measurement of untreated and treated water. There was also the requirement for underground drainage for transporting the waste water to the STP. The report also mentioned other measures to be taken which included the Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council to take necessary steps for collecting the waste and its proper disposal in forthcoming Nivnittinath Yatra and other religious festivals.
Keeping in mind the reports submitted on the matter the NGT directed the Secretary, Urban Development (Local Bodies), Maharashtra to ensure that requisite measures are taken so that the STP works with proper capacity and is duly connected to the sources of sewage to prevent untreated sewage being unscientifically discharged, affecting the public health and environment. For this purpose, an appropriate action plan be prepared with specific timelines and budgetary support. No untreated sewage be discharged into the river Godavari. Pending setting up of STP, in situ remediation of drains may be ensured. A Compliance report has to be filed within one month.
