Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding an industry engaged in refining used oils causing pollution, village Umedpur, Ludhiana, Punjab, 03/08/2023
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Jagjeet Singh Vs State of Haryana dated August 3, 2023.
The applicant said that Global Refinery operating in village Umedpur, Sohnewal, District Ludhiana and engaged in refining used oils is using some kind of material/fuel for their furnace burning, which is polluting. The ashes of the burnt fuel are also lying in nearby areas. The industry is also using huge quantity of ground water without obtaining consent from the concerned authority. Complaint was made to the Punjab Pollution Control Board but no action has been taken on the same.
The NGT, August 3, 2023 directed a joint committee to verify the factual position and compliances to the provision of Rule 9 of the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, consent to establish, consent to operate conditions and sources of water duly authorized for usage and "take appropriate remedial action by following due course of law and giving opportunity of being heard to the project proponent".
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and District Magistrate (DM), Ludhiana will be part of the committee and the HSPCB would be the nodal agency for coordination and compliance, the order added.
