Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of Nandini Chakravarty Vs State of West Bengal dated 12/11/2024.
The matter related to the pollution caused by factories and workshops in village Purbannapara, Makardah mouza, Domjur block, district Howrah.
The Saraswati Canal has been blocked due to it being used for dumping of waste water and other industrial waste material by several industries present in the area that continue unregulated dumping of the industrial wastes also resulting in deterioration of the environment.
The NGT directed notices to be issued to the District Magistrate, Howrah; West Bengal Pollution Control Board; Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, West Bengal and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). All the respondents have been directed to file their counter affidavits. The court also directed the constitution of a committee to carry out a fact finding enquiry. The committee would inspect the site in question and submit its report within four weeks.
