Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of Environment Pollution & Health Hazards in the State Vs State of Meghalaya & Others dated 13/12/2017 regarding solid waste management in the state of Meghalaya.

NGT Eastern Bench directs the State of Meghalaya, MUDA (Meghalaya Urban Development Authority) and Municipal Bodies to file a report regarding solid waste treatment plant. The Court noted that in hilly areas a land fill site is difficult. In order to get over these impediments, the State of Goa has come up with an unique scheme which involves utilisation of the same land fill site for establishment of comprehensive solid waste treatment i.e., composting of biodegradable waste, recycling of plastic and other solid wastes, waste to energy plant including the initial segregation. The Court observed that Meghalaya should consider adopting this method.
