This suo motu writ petition has been registered to deal with the issues pertaining to pollution in National Capital Region (NCR) and the whole of northern India, particularly during the winter months.

The Apex Court took up the case as very "little constructive efforts have been made by the government and other stake holders to find a solution to the problem."

Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India has informed the Court that he has interacted with Vishawanth R. Joshi, a researcher from Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan working in the development of appropriate technology to deal with the problem.

The SC directed that feasibility of the technology should be explored at the earliest, keeping in mind the seriousness of the situation and a report submitted by December 3, 2019.
