Report on waste management in Vapi city, Gujarat, 26/10/2020

Reply by Vapi Nagar Palika in the matter of Kirti Desai & Others vs Collector Valsad & Others (Original Application No. 57/2016) dated 26/10/2020.

The matter related to solid waste management in the city of Vapi.

At present, the waste generated within the limits of Vapi Municipality is 50 tons per day (TPD). 65%-70% of generated waste is segregated at source, collected and transferred to the Material Recovery Facility. The segregated waste is then sold to authorised recyclers.

Around 33 vehicles collect dry and wet waste and are fitted with GPS, travelling from door to door to collect waste in its notified path. The municipality has installed a 100 kg wet waste organic waste converter (OWC) machine. The waste which is processed in the said machine is used as a compost in the gardens maintained by the municipality and the remaining sold to residents for their use.

A solid waste plant having capacity of 100 TPD is in the process of being completed by June 30, 2021. For the treatment of the sewage and foreseeing the expansion of the city in the next 30 years, the Vapi Nagar Palika has already initiated construction of 2 sewage treatment plants (STPs) having capacity of 14 MLD and 29.5 MLD.  A total of 7 drains are in the vicinity of the Vapi municipality. The points wherein in situ remediation would be carried out are earmarked (which is an intermediate arrangement) till the operation of the STPs commences.
