Gene patents are meant to encourage innovation, but in DNA diagnostics, they have stirred controversy. Amid worries and worst-case scenarios, there are few empirical studies to help form an accurate picture of how patents affect clinical genetic testing in the United States. The authors assembled eight case studies addressing the effects of patents and licensing on access to genetic tests for ten conditions.
