The women of Rameda and Ravatwada villages of Sabarkantha district, Gujarat, developed a rainwater harvesting technique in the 1950s. They made a stone bund (nullah plug) and filled earth in the front. This was followed by cutting and filling valleys between the hills to reclaim land. Over the years, this has improved yields of agriculture and livestock, consequently improving living standards. Water harvesting has actually brought the village community together, increasing cohesion amongst women. Their status in the family and society has increased. Thus, water harvesting is also about empowerment of women.
