The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the collector of Thanjavur to initiate prosecution against the Commissioner of the Mayiladuthurai Municipality in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu if no proper steps are taken to check pollution in the Cauvery river within three months. The bench comprising Chief Justice M S Liberon and Justice D Raju, in its response to a writ petition filed by the Senior Citizen Council, Mayiladuthurai, said that sewage water has been polluting the river since 1987.
