FLOODED RICE

FLOODED-PRONE regions of Bangladesh, China and North India could benefit from the discovery of a new improved variety of deep water rice.

Scientists at the international rice research instutute (IRRI) said at an international conference at Manila that they had been a new rice plant, testing it in water upto a metre deep to simulate flood conditions and produced high yeilds.

IRRI scientists have been trying to breed new deep water rice to increase its yeilds in areas where flood drainage and use of irrigated rice not possible.
