The science, technology and environment ministry has instructed the wildlife and national parks department to look into the possibility of setting up a research and development unit to protect wildlife in Malaysia.

The ministry may also call for the country's Wildlife Protection Act to be amended, and encourage participation of non-governmental organisations ( ngo s) to work on issues related to wildlife protection, said environmental minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding. He said this after a meeting with deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. "Some of these ngo s have a better understanding of the issues regarding wildlife protection in the country,' said the minister. He also said that the ministry would invite Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan to help promote wildlife protection.
