The Haleji lake plays host to over 100,000 migratory water fowls of over 230 species during winters. The lake is threatened with extinction due to a fall in water level and weeds. Earlier, the level was maintained by the Karachi Water and Sewage Board as it provided the city with potable water. Now the water is being supplied from the Indus and the lake has fallen into neglect. Steps are being taken to prepare the lake for the arrival of the fowls in October. The government has asked the irrigation department to help maintain the level on a priority basis and the sewage board is going to resume the deweeding process.
