TAKING ON THE TANNERIES

In view of the pollution caused to the Reth river by the tanneries near Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh, the High Court has directed the state pollution control board to provide the details of the chemical examination report of the river waters within a fortnight. The Lucknow bench order was passed by Justice Haider Abbas Raza, the senior vacation judge in response to a public petition which stated that 3 tanneries -- East India Tannery Mills, Prema Tannery and Hasan Tannery, which were operating in Alampur, Barabanki -- were releasing the effluents into the Reth.
